The diverse sounds on the album coincide directly with the vibrant city itself. Each track takes you on a journey through NYC, allowing the listener to fully envelop themselves in New York City culture and its lifestyle. New York State of Mind is the perfect album for those looking to experience New York without actually physically being there….”

My New York City CD consist of ten songs, that have been apart of my New York City life style since I moved here. Each song on the CD is either a song that reminds me of a specific event that happened to me in NY, songs that I enjoy to listen to as I walk on the streets of NY, songs that remind me of a certain location in NY or a song that resembles to me the sounds of New York City. The one song on this CD that explains New York City to me is, “Wide Eyes” by Local Natives. This song mad me realize that in New York City you are able to learn so much just by looking around with your own eyes. One Day while walking home from school I was listening to this song and realized that I am always looking at the ground as I’m walking. At that very moment I decided to stop and just look up and see with my own eyes.

This CD are songs that all have personal meanings to me. For someone else all these songs might not resemble nothing of New York for them. I feel that if the listener were to experience and understand the meaning and event of each song then they will comprehend.

Song- “NYC” by Interpol

“Gone, Gone, to New York City”, compiled by Jake+Brooke, is a unique mix-album of songs and bands related to NYC. The album captures the listener with Conor Oberst’s song “NYC-Gone, Gone Gone”, and quickly moves into the New York Rangers fan song, “Song 2” by Blur. Neither the song, nor the band are much related to New york in any other way than this, but like Adam Graves stated, “everyone wants to be a ranger” and the NYR are a major part of being a patriotic new yorker. the album becomes somber with a song by Simon & Garfunkel, an iconic sound which once filled the streets and subways of New York. As the single to the album, “NYC” by Interpol provides the unique music sound of a New York City band just on the verge of the millennium. The song captures the evolution of music during their time, and is the track which connects music from artists like John Lennon and Lou Reed to The Ramones and Guided by Voices. Having just hit NYC for their Classic Lineup reunion tour, it is great to see a Guided by Voices song on here. Needless to say, this album is a great mixture of music and leaves the listener in a “New york State of Mind”.

New York City: A Playlist features music from a range of genres, including folk, proto-punk, alternative, doo-wop, jazz, swing, glam, and classic rock. These songs, from musicians such as Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, and Billie Holiday, provide great insight into the multi-faced city that is New York. Additionally, they are illustrative of many eras of music, many of which have strong ties to New York City, and thus the New York lifestyles that existed during those times.

Review:

New York City: A Playlist is a remarkable collection of songs that provide unique perspectives into the world of New York City. From Bob Dylan’s earliest impressions of the city in “Talkin’ New York,” to the depiction of a 1970s New York in “Shattered” by the Rolling Stones, New York City: A Playlist is a truly excellent compilation of songs by venerated musicians as well as lesser-known gems. Anyone interested in hearing exceptional insights of and reflections on the City that Never Sleeps would do well to take a listen to this playlist.

College life on the whole has been…stressful. And that is exactly what i wanted to focus on for my map. I wanted to show areas of great stress as one would see desert areas or fertile areas on a normal geographical map.Generally my mornings are lovely and calm, but the guaranteed stresses that come with (a majority) of my classes causes chaos to the middle section on the region I call my afternoon. As class dwindles down and I slip into the evening, I am usually quite calm and pleased that a hard days work as come to an end.

The day started out...

lesleybravo:

Thursday November 4th 2010

The day started out like any other Thursday morning. I woke up around ten am then headed for the bathroom for a morning shower. I got ready for the day and grabbed some breakfast on my way out to class. I had Lab class until 11:40 and then I had to go to Utrecht to get some materials for my other classes. I then worked on my self-portrait painting for 2D and then went out for some coffee. Next I had to hale a taxi to take me to port authority to meet some friends to see a show in Jersey. The bus ride took about two hours but finally we ended up at Asbury park. I watched my friend’s band Fish for Bears play for about two hours and then hung out for a little. We then got dinner and headed back to the city. After arriving I checked my emails and then went straight to bed by 3:30am. A normal day.

“24 hour champagne diet”
The map I have created...

thenewyorknew:

“24 hour champagne diet”

The map I have created is meant to illustrate 24 hours of my life; specifically from 10pm on Saturday the 30th of October to 10pm on Sunday the 31st of October. It is a rough sketch of the lower part of Manhattan, combined with clusters of photos that give a glimpse of the different locations in which I spent my time in. The various arrows represent the different means of transportation I utilized.

The title I chose for this blog-post does, quite ironically, not go well with my personal taste, since I strongly dislike champagne. Nevertheless, I chose this quote from the song “Money to Blow”, since it symbolizes a certain nightlife-focused lifestyle. It is suitable for these 24 hours, but I do not feel that this song represents my overall lifestyle and general mind-set.

I decided to start the 24 hour map at 10pm since, like implied earlier, both Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st largely revolved around the night-time. In other words, most of my activities took place during the night.

As I assume is evident in the images on the map, I did, in the hours they display, spend a significant amount of time preparing for- and celebrating Halloween. The phenomenon of Halloween is something I have been familiar with for a while. I did however, not know that it had such an important place in the culture of NYC. I had never experienced Halloween in the US before, and I was quite shocked to see that many people would spend enormous amounts of time and money on Halloween. The apparent general obsession with “all-things-Halloween” was also very fascinating to me. An example of this, and my choice to end this post, is the song “This is Halloween” which was on replay in my hallway as my neighbors were decorating, about a week ahead of the dates shown in the map.

Map of my day. It could be a book you put on your coffee table or just hang it on the wall as a poster. :)

Map of my day started on a Friday morning with waking up and in order to keep it looking like a traditional day I ended it up with falling asleep. I tried to think outside of a box and not to make it on a piece of paper. Since I was excited about this project I just went with the flow. Even though I did not know where it was going, I was confident something will come to me. I cut out 4x4 squares and started to doodle and glue pictures onto them. After it was done I thought that it would look cool as a poster on the wall, but then it fell on the ground and I realized that it can stand up by itself. This event made me realize that it would look good as a coffee table book as well.

A lot of people have this one spot in their room/ apartment that needs a decoration on it, but every single poster or painting is simply too big. I mapped my day so that people can fill that area without moving their things around. It is not only slim, but also fun and playful. After taking notes for this homework I realized that I drew a lot of linear things on the paper, so I decided to use this concept in my final project. Every essay for an English class seems to be written in a Standard English, so I decided to make it more fun and informal. I used words like: “yas, yas, yas”, instead of simply saying: “yes” or “roomiez” instead of “roommates.” Since I enjoyed it so much I will put it on my wall to remind me that even though I have so much homework and boring things to do, my life is fun as well. At least sometimes.

When deciding on how to map 24 hours of my life I chose to represent it through walking boots. I decided to create boots because it is showing everywhere I walked throughout the day. The boots are a pictoral guide to where I traveled through out the day. I mapped my day from 9am friday to saturday morning. In those 24 hours I traveled to the New York Public Library for drawing class so I pulled in pictures of the subway trains, books, and the actual library as well. I also went to Bikram Yoga and St Marks at night. My friends and I got gelato and sat and hung out at St. Marks for a few hours. On saturday I had to wake up early so I represented that with an alarm clock. The reason I woke up early was because I went to Red Hook Community Farm in the morning and after that the PS1 book fair. I dragged in pictures of books to emphasize the time spent in the library and in the book fair for a good portion of my 24 hours.
